SIMPLY DELICIOUS MARKETPLACE
With “chipolte” this and “polenta” that, timeless classics like toasted pastrami on rye are sometimes overlooked. That is, until one discovers a delicatessen like Simply Delicious Marketplace near the Bristol Motor Speedway-where comfort foods meet casual luxury. The name “Simply Delicious” says it all: straightforward and scrumptious. A cross between country café and upscale grocer, it’s a neat place to sit or shop a spell.
As a sandwich-and-soup café, it’s got a lot to offer. The lunch menu is packed with perennial favorites like Reubens, tuna melts and steak ‘n’ cheese-done right. Fresh swiss chesse melts into a toasted bratwurst sandwich. Tarragon mayonaise and crab salad spike a popular turkey-BLT variation, the “Crabby Carolyn.” And in honor of the neighboring Speedway’s president, Simply Delicious offers the “Jeff Byrd Platter,”
a serving of both homemade chicken and tuna salad atop lettuce and accompanied by Texas Pete, tomatoes and a side of fruit. The ever-changing list of homemade soups is of particular note. On any given day, the soup specials might include spicy tomato-herb bisque, chicken tortilla soup, or homemade chili with beans.
As a specialty store, Simply Delicious strikes a comfortable balance between fun lowbrow and hoity-toity highbrow. On the one hand on NASCAR posters (naturally!) mingle with the framed amateur art on the walls. A wide variety of beer and bulk Jelly Belly jellybeans are available to choose from. The sheer audacity of the hot sauce selection is hilarious. To the other extreme, there’s capicolla in the display and crumbled stilton in the salads. Rows of fine specialty-flavored bulk coffees beckon. Extensive wine-making supplies encourage homemade vintages. The café’s two qualities-at home and qussied up-combine to make sure there’s something for everyone.
Simply Delicious is strictly a word-of-mouth operation, which makes it a bit of a “best-kept secret.” Since 1992 it has offered a warm welcome and the thrill of discovery for those who hear tell of it. “Even now, we’re not well-known,” says owner Larry Slipek. “I can always tell when someone’s never been in here before by the look on their face. They’ll say, ‘We’ve driven by a hundred times, but never been in until today.’” It’s a pleasant surprise-the kind that keeps people coming back.
