In 2012, The Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron celebrate 50 years of serving the boating community in the Tri-Cities on Boone, South Holston and Watauga Lakes.  They promote safe boating through education on the water and in the classroom.  Classes include boating safety, seamanship, navigation, weather, communications, mechanics, and related subjects.

JCSPS is part of the United States Power Squadrons which has 40,000 members organized in 430 squadrons across the country.  They also do free vessel safety checks.  The Boone Lake Association and the JCSPS work together on projects and share members in both organizations.

Group cleans polluted Beaver Creek

2011, a historic year of severe weather, has destroyed lives, homes, and the countryside. Long after the storms, some of their remnants have also destroyed Sullivan County's Beaver Creek.

The creek has remained clogged with downed trees and debris for roughly 18 months. Saturday, a group of volunteers did their part to begin restoring the storm.

"Beaver Creek's a long creek, it goes way back into Southwest Virginia and whenever there's a flood, trees come uprooted from stream banks,” Boone Lake Association President Russ Harrison said. “Eventually, when this would finally break loose, all of this material would end up in Boone Lake itself, where we would have to collect it piecemeal from Boone Lake.”

Organized by the Boone Lake Association, Saturday’s cleanup project resulted in the removal of trash and more than 25 trees from the creek. In all, 16 volunteers participated. The volunteer effort included the help of the City of Bristol, Stickley Farm, two private contractors, and the Boone Watershed Partnership.

"It's a beautiful stream and it's got waterfalls and all the features that people move to East Tennessee for, but it's neglected,” Boone Watershed Partnership President Gary Barrigar said.

According to Barrigar, this is the first step of an even larger cleanup effort. Boone Watershed Partnership recently applied for a $151,000 federal grant that if approved, would fund a three-year restoration project at Beaver Creek, Barrigar said.

The Boone Lake Association has launched a new boat to help in their clean up efforts on Boone Lake. The boat, a Carolina Skiff was custom built in Norfolk, Virginia and was designed specifically for Boone Lake Association’s clean up operations. It becomes part of a three boat fleet that the BLA keeps on the lake from early spring to late fall collecting trash and debris that is washed in or thrown in the waterway. “This is the first new boat we have ever had.” said Lake Operations Manager Ken Bronner. The boat was purchased with funds donated by Boone Lake Associations members and was outfitted by the members themselves.
“We would like to thank our members Ken Bronner, Ed Smith and Harvey Smith for all of their hard work in transporting the boat and fitting it with all the necessary equipment.” said group President Russ Harrison.

The boat along with the others will be put to good use to cleanup the tremendous amount of trash and debris that has washed into the lake with the recent rains. For more information about the Boone Lake Association go to boonelakeassociation.org.

********FUNDRAISER FOR BOONE LAKE VICTIM*******

Last summer there was a tragic boating accident on Boone Lake that resulted in Miranda Johnson losing a leg and left with a badly damaged hip. Miranda was a student at NE State Community College at the time pursuing a degree in nursing.  Insurance will not cover the cost of a prosthetic limb.

A fundraiser is being held for Miranda throughout the Tri-Cities area on March 15 from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM at Renovus Medical Spa in Johnson City.  Donations will result in chances for free services at the medical spa throughout this year.

For further information about the event, please contact representatives of Renovus Medical Spa at 207-0154. The Boone Lake community is urged to participate in this very worthwhile cause.
